In the recently held 2011 Annual Tony Award last June 12, 2011, the musical “The Book of Mormon” has won the Tony Award for best musical.

The Book of Mormon is a religious satire musical with a book, lyrics, and music created by the joint efforts of Trey Parker, Matt stone, and Robert Lopez. Parker and Matt stone are best known for creating the animated comedy South Park television series and they co-created the music with Lopez, the one who co-wrote and co-composed “Avenue Q”. The show ridicules the organized religion and traditional musical theater, reflecting the creators’ lifelong fascination with Mormonism and musicals.

The musical tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries who were sent to a remote village in northern Uganda, where a brutal warlord is threatening the local population. Although it was hard for them to penetrate the locals because the people’s main concern is more on famine, poverty and the increasing cases of AIDS, still, the two missionaries tried to share their scriptures to them and it worked out well.

As the critical and box office darling, the show was the favorite to take home the night’s biggest crown thanks to a story and song that both poked fun and honored Broadway’s history. It was very unlikely for a musical with a religious-theme to be held in stage acts and musicals, but “The Book of Mormon” really risked it all, and it eventually paid off. The show has beaten out the three best acts “Catch Me If You Can”, “The Scottsboro Boys” and “Sister Act”.

The show finally premiered on Broadway on March 2011 after seven years of continuous development. The show garnered positive critical responses and numerous theater awards, including nine awards coming from the 65th Tony Awards Night.
